What is intuitive eating?
Intuitive Eating (IE) is an approach to food and health that encourages you to dive into the ways that your body, mind, and nutrition meld together. It is NOT a diet and it is an individualized thing. It embraces the fact that YOU are the expert of your own body and thus know what your body needs at any given time. It is a positive path towards finding food freedom as well as positive body image. It is a process, and you don’t become an intuitive eater overnight.
The 10 Principles of Intuitive Eating:
1. Reject the Diet Mentality
2. Honor Your Hunger
3. Make Peace with Food
4. Challenge the Food Police
5. Respect Your Fullness
6. Discover the Satisfaction Factor
7. Honor Your Feelings Without Using Food
8. Respect Your Body
9. Exercise–Feel the Difference
10. Honor Your Health–Gentle Nutrition
Intuitive Eating was developed by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. I highly recommend you read the book (or listen to it while driving in the car). Remember, IE is not a black and white approach, nor a quick fix. I encourage you to take the time to work through things and give yourself compassion - some principles seem easy, others take months or years to finally “click.” I find myself revisiting certain principles or even the whole book from time to time. IE is a journey, not a sprint.
