What is HEalth at every size®?
Health at Every Size (HAES)® is a movement that embraces people of all sizes, colors, genders, etc. in the pursuit of health. With HAES, all people can be and deserve to be healthy, regardless of their size. Weight simply is not an indicator of health status; people can be healthy whether they are thin or fat, while people can also be unhealthy whether they are thin or fat. Proccupation with being thin in our culture has led to an increase in eating disorders, body shame, and obsession with avoid becoming fat. At the same time, those who are in larger bodies feel immense shame, stigma, and fear of how they’ll be treated in our society.
As a HAES® supporting, weight-neutral dietitian, this means that I do not endorse weight loss as a goal nor using weight as a marker of health. I do, however, support those who want to break free from the obsession and preoccupation over weight, which really is just a number. Rather than weight loss, I can help you focus on behavior changes that can improve health, whether you are managing a health condition or want to improve your energy levels; weight change is NOT a behavior that can be modified, nor should it be.
