When Wellness Culture Becomes Harmful
I have shared my story about how my “healthy” lifestyle became an obsession with calorie counting, excessive exercise, and shrinking my body, which led to daily shame, anxiety, and often uncontrollabe binges. Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CDN is an amazing anti-diet, HAES dietitian who was one of the first RDs I found when looking for a way out of the diet culture pit I was stuck in. She has a podcast, Food Psych, where she interviews everyone from fat activists to weight-inclusive therapists to fellow anti-diet dietitians. Highly recommend listening for some great insight and advice from some of the best minds in the anti-diet space!
Christy just wrote an amazing article for Self Magazine about how the thin-obsessed, diet-laden culture we live in can quickly become toxic, both physically and mentally - yet often this goes unnoticed, since this behavior is viewed as “healthy” and “inspirational.” Her story is similar to mine and I’m sure the stories of many of you out there. Hopefully this will give you some hope that there is a way out of the rabbit hole that is food obsession and body shame. Give it a read and let me know what you think!
